Letter project.
Everyone knows that emailing has for some time been the most widely used method of communication in business, between friends and acquaintances, even lovers perhaps…. The process of letter writing and emailing are of course so distinct from one other and the outcomes so completely different. It may be no more fragile than a paper record, but the prospect of the traces of my connections to the world disappearing once my inbox is full feels very sad indeed.
So some writer, craftspeople and artist friends and I are sending each other things in the post. There’s no limit to the number of connections that we can make between and collaborations with letter-author-makers, so please join in if you’d like.
I will post what I have been sent in the coming months…
Professor Cockles, girls at a gig at the Eel Pie hotel and inside the hotel before the fire. These initial sketches are part of my Eel Pie Island project looking at the fascinating and diverse culture of this tiny island that has inspired musicians, inventors and artists and the river itself which is still such a life source for local ferry people, boat builders and traders. I grew up near to the island and I too feel linked to the River Thames.
Little painting thoughts
Since emailing has overshadowed letter writing (and since the nature, time scale and communicative outcome of emails are so different) some friends and I have started sending each other things in the post. These are some things/thoughts that I’ve sent in the post to different artists, craftspeople and artists that I know. I will show what they send in reply…. I’d love for this project to grow- there’s potential for an infinite number of letter-author collaborations…

Eel Pie Island
I grew up by the River Thames and for me Eel Pie Island was always (and still is) an intriguing and exciting local unknown. From Professor Cockles’ home made deep sea diving kits in the 1930’s to swinging teens at the Eel Pie Island hotel in the 1960’s, Eel Pie island has long been a place that’s inspired and cultivated artists, musicians and inventors. For all it’s quaint gentrification, the River Thames at Twickenham is still at work. But the river is more than just a source of livelihood for the boat builders, ferry workers and traders, with it’s fluctuating tides the river brings ideas, news, change and energy.
